Can morphine be used or not?

After surgery, pain must be controlled with drugs, which can cause some side effects. However, the complications that can result from poor postoperative acute pain treatment are significant, such as pneumonia, venous thrombosis, infection, and delayed healing, and may lead to the development of chronic pain in the future.

If postoperative pain cannot be controlled with regular painkillers, the doctor shall select morphine-based painkillers to assist patients. Patients are often concerned about becoming addicted to morphine-based pain relief, but this is usually not a problem if the drugs are taken according to their doctor’s professional advice. With regard to the nausea and vomiting in some patients from the use of morphine-based medications, the doctor will also give anti-nausea and vomiting drugs to ameliorate this problem. For special populations, such as those prone to hypoventilation and those that have difficulty urinating (especially elderly male patients), the doctor will choose a safer morphine-based medication for treatment. In addition to relieving postoperative pain with drugs, it is important to reduce the occurrence of related complications, shortening the recovery time and improving the patient’s quality of life!
