Is surgery likely to be painful? What if I’m afraid of pain?

China Medical University Hsinchu Hospital / Anesthesia Department / Dr. Bo-liang Chen VS

As long as it is a surgery, it will cause some damage to skin or internal organs, with varying degrees of pain depending on the size of the wound, the degree of invasiveness and the scope of the surgery.

Pain is a subjective feeling. Anesthesiologists will evaluate each patient's surgical conditions and have various methods for managing pain.

Patients who are more intolerant of pain can discuss postoperative pain management plans with their doctors before surgery, which is also part of shared decision-making between doctors and patients. Analgesia can be performed with a single drug or a combination of multiple drugs(multimodal analgesia)to further manage pain, reduce pain perception, and reduce drug-related side effects.
